Weird part II
Have been thinking about the weird dream - I think my mother may have had something to do with it. I knew taking her to London would be ... well... interesting. Just to set the scene, my mum is the least weird person going, she looks just like a normal, older lady, grey curly hair, conservatively dressed, doesn't draw attention to herself. But my mother attracts weird! Wherever we go, the local nutter comes and talks to her; and random strange things happen in front of her, which I never see.
Yesterday, we were in Covent Garden market hall, just browsing through all the antiques, as you do. I got a couple of stalls behind, and my aunt was a couple of stalls ahead. Then we heard mum talking. One of the stall holders, an elderly man, was telling her that he was a Martian called Julia. He was wearing a Pearly King type cap, a diamante necklace in the shape of a man's tie, and two large fabric flowers (I think those ones on hair elastics) on each arm. He told her that Mars was a nice place to live, and that at only 700, he was quite young really. All this with a completely straight face. My mother was answering him as if this was a perfectly normal occurrence, and promised to drop in for tea if she ever passed Mars. I was torn between being embarrassed and dragging her away, and just listening to see how long they could keep this up!
Then later, when we were on the phone checking that each other had got home safely, she told me that she'd seen two guys in Waterloo, in full Sikh turban and bushy black beards, one wearing a normal Western man's suit, and the other wearing normal man's jacket and shoes, and a skirt. Just an ordinary, just-below-the-knee ladies skirt, not a tunic or sari/sarong or kilt or any of the things men wear. My aunt backed her up on this, so I have to believe her. Do Sikhs wear skirts? Or, as my mother quaintly puts it, do they have "funny people" too? She actually used the word "minced" to describe the way they walked off too!
I wonder if this will happen to me as I get older ...
