Plea to speakers of unusual languages!

Anyone on my flist speak a non-European language? (I know at least one of you does *grin*) or even Welsh or Irish? I love LJ/CBB/espace generally - I know so many interesting people!

I need to translate some phrases into different languages for a Harvest presentation, about pre-school education in developing countries and why it's important to be able to read. I've tried some of them in babelfish and a couple of other programs, but they mostly only do European languages (although I did get one to do Keep off the grass in Tagalog!).

So, if anyone could translate these phrases into as many languages as possible, especially ones with different alphabets, I'd be EXTREMELY grateful ... :-) although I don't think some alphabets will show up on my computer :-( I know Russian and Greek do, and I think Hebrew might?

Keep off the grass
Poisonous - do not swallow
Bargain - half price
Danger - quicksand
Thaw completely before cooking
Take this medicine three times a day
If you don't fill out this form, you will be fined £1,000

Eating too many of these sweets might have a laxative effect
Please help yourself

(and no, I didn't choose them, they came with the presentation pack! BMS PEPE programme if anyone's interested)

Weeelllll....I'll give some of them a go, but they'll be VERY rough translations! Just make sure there are no Nepalis in the congregation that Sunday OK? And I'll put them in romanized script as your computer won't do Devanagari, I'm pretty sure *grin*

When do you need them by?

[identity profile] mrsrev.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Saturday actually :-( and that would be very shiny of you! "Romanized" is the word I was looking for yesterday and couldn't remember *headdesk* And I don't think we're likely to have any Nepalis at the Harvest Supper somehow ... though you never know!

I can probably get you the Welsh if I ask a few friends... When is it that you want them by?

Incidentally, I hate to say it but Babelfish isn't always too accurate... Amusing though.

Yes please Rosie! Need them by Saturday ...
and yes, I'd noticed the not-too-accurate-ness of babelfish - including the random English words mid-sentence!

Do you want them in Irish?

[identity profile] bluebellbicycle.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
And will I post it here or email you? :)

here is fine! I shouldn't think any of the people who will be guessing on Saturday read my LJ - I hope they don't!

Thank you, that's suitably obscure for most people I should imagine! This is where I find the Irish speaker in our church!

Not obscure at all! ;p
At least, not where *I* am ...
