See me stealth ...

only had 30 minutes computer time at home this morning, just about enough to read all my flist and catch up on CBB. So now I'm stealthing on at work, because shock horror! I actually have work to do! It's been so long that I'm having culture shock :-( However, as Dave doesn't come in on Wednesdays and Matt is having the day off to babysit cos his wife's gone away on a course, I'm all alone again - weird after three weeks of company, which in turn was weird after three months of alone-ness. *Note to self: Must not spend all day on the internet*

The presentation on Saturday went very well, and big thanks to [livejournal.com profile] roisinane
and [livejournal.com profile] rosie_rah (and Welsh advisor and mother!) - there were some bizarre guesses which I couldn't write down as I was in charge of the laptop and a microphone. One person got the "bargain - half price" in Welsh, and one of the kids guessed "Danger" but not the quicksand! It did, however, get over the point that not being able to read is a severe handicap in life. And I think it was more scary because they weren't languages from far away, but from the two neighbouring countries! One of the projects in the presentation was about youngsters in the Ecuador jungle who grow up speaking Quechua, but school is in Spanish, so if they don't go to pre-school and learn at least a little basic Spanish, they're already behind on day 1 of compulsory school.

OK, answers please - is a toasted sandwich (a) a sandwich made up and then toasted, ie with hot filling, or (b) a sandwich made from toasted bread, ie cold filling?

I always go with (a), but in a cafe on Monday we were presented with (b) - a bit strange cos it was cheese'n'onion and I love the gloopy melty cheese, but this was cold grated cheese with onion, sandwiched in toast. It was very nice, mostly because the bread was yummy, but just not right. So now we're wondering, is it us who are odd, is it a regional thing, or is it just this cafe (who admittedly are under new management) who have strange ideas?

Right - to work. I'll be back at lunchtime :-)

A proper toastie is hot toast, hot filling, but depending on the circumstances (and the filling!) I'll have a cold filling with toast...

It has to be hot filling, esp when it is cheese. That is how a toasted sandwich is.

However, if I am giving the children toast with jam, esp if they are dressed, I will often cut and sandwich it as it makes less mess that way, so that is toast with a cold filling. But it isn't a toastie, just a less messy way of eating spead toast.

yup, also voting for a). the point is that the cheese goes stringy like pizza and burns the roof of your mouth on the first bite, rendering you unable to taste the rest of the sandwich soaks a little into the bread to soften it. yum, toasties. the sandwich shop below our office does extremely cheap toasties. though this seems a little bizarre to me - in there, a cheese and tomato toastie costs 20p more than a tuna and sweetcorn one. how does that work?

It only takes you 30 minutes to catch up on your flist and the CBB? Wow! I need to learn how to do that! :-D

I'm glad the presentation went well.

And toasties should definitely have a hot, preferably very melted filling!

It only took that this morning cos I'd been up late last night catching up as well! Normally even 40 minutes isn't really enough :-(

toasted sandwich should all be hot - otherwise it could be called a toast sandwich, although that also sounds like the toast is the filling!

Definitely voting for a.

Definitely (a). Although I occasionally make myself toast with cold cheese in it, I'd be most disappointed if I ordered a toastie in a cafe and got that!
