I only just got the hang of getting RSS feeds into LJ...so this may not be a comprehensive and coherant explanation...however, this is what I do:
Find the address of the feed (e.g. for cartoon blog I went to http://www.cartoonchurch.com/blog/ then how to subscribe (near the bottom on the right) and the address was there)
Go to the syndication page http://www.livejournal.com/syn/ and copy the address of the feed into the Add Feed by URL box. You can only add new feeds if you're a paid member (I am not!), but if someone else has set it up, then putting the address in there will find it for you and you'll get a page like the add friend page.
So you can get all sorts of things... :)
